David Hooper
David Hooper is a Director of CFM for Master Fleet, a full service maintenance provider with three shops in Northeast Wisconsin. Master Fleet provides fleet maintenance, consulting, and fleet management opportunities to over 200 fleets, including some of the nations’ largest carriers (Schneider National, JB Hunt, Werner, YRC, Saia, USF Holland, and Gordon). David has been involved in the transportation industry for 25 years at multiple levels of management and responsibility. In his role, David uses his industry experience to aide customers in improving their fleet maintenance costs and performance as a consultant and 3rd party manager/solutions provider. David is also our Lead Facilitator for “Maintenance Leadership Academy”, (MLA) offering customized training in “Fleet Maintenance Best Practices”, “Lean Maintenance”, and overall cost reduction.
David began his career working on an LTL dock for Smalley Trucking and Roadrunner Freight in Atlanta. He was responsible for opening the Roadrunner terminal where he worked as a supervisor while attending college. He left the LTL setting for the US Army where he learned to work on heavy equipment and became responsible for maintaining a fleet of heavy construction equipment. After active duty, David was hired by JB Hunt and started learning about fleet maintenance as a tractor technician at their Atlanta terminal.
After working as a technician, David quickly moved into management beginning with service writing and eventually becoming a shift foreman. Recognized for his business acumen, David became a cost analyst for JB Hunt and eventually helped to reduce cost by $110 per tractor and improve technician efficiency by 130% in all areas of maintenance. He was responsible for warranty procedures, management training, profit/loss analysis, maintenance cost, and employee headcount. He was also responsible for training managers in CPM analysis and cost efficiency in other locations.
After his work in cost reduction, David was relocated to Concord, NC where he opened and staffed a new JB Hunt terminal. Between Concord and Atlanta, he spent the next ten years as a terminal manager responsible for maintenance, freight, and driver issues for a domiciled fleet totaling 5,500 units and 100 employees. He left the fleet environment and accepted a retail position as a branch manager with W.W. Williams in Atlanta. He spent the next two years managing a store of 85 employees responsible for parts and service sales for a Detroit Diesel/ Allison/ MTU distributor with annual gross sales over $24 million before joining the Master Fleet team.
David is a native of Atlanta, GA. He is currently studying Industrial Engineering at Kennesaw State University in Marietta, GA. He has been trained in “Lean Principles”, “Business of People”, “The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team,” and “Know Can Do.” David has traveled to other regions to share this training with other managers and also incorporates these ideas in the MLA classes.
